Install Smile on iPhone

Install and update Smile with KSign right on your iPhone, get the full version with AutoFill and passkeys, or use a computer and Sideloadly.

Smile for iPhone and iPad runs on iOS 16 or newer. It isn’t in the App Store, so there are two ways to have it:

  • With KSign - anyone can install it right on their iPhone, no computer. New versions show up in KSign to install in a tap.
  • The full version - signed by Smile for your own iPhone once a Smile founder approves it. It adds AutoFill (passwords and 2-step codes in any app), passkeys, and updates in one tap.

Install with KSign (no computer)

You need KSign on your iPhone with a signing certificate imported in it - your own Apple Developer certificate, or one from someone you trust.

  1. On your iPhone, open auth.smilecorp.co.uk/download and tap Add Smile to KSign. KSign opens with Smile’s source added. (Or in KSign go to Sources, tap + and paste https://auth.smilecorp.co.uk/downloads/ios/source.json.)
  2. In KSign open Smile and tap Get.
  3. Tap Sign, then Install, and confirm.
  4. Open Smile and sign in with your Smile account.

The download page also has the .ipa file itself (the Download the .ipa button) for any other signer.

Attention

Only sign apps with a certificate from someone you trust. If the certificate’s owner revokes it, Smile stops opening until you sign it again with another one - your vault is safe on Smile’s servers either way.

New versions: Smile’s Settings > About says when there’s one. Tap Get it: Smile hands it straight to KSign - tap Sign and Install. Your vault, sign-in and settings are kept.

The full version: AutoFill, passkeys and one-tap updates

Apple only lets an app fill passwords and passkeys in other apps if it’s signed for exactly that - shared KSign certificates never can be. So Smile signs a version for your own iPhone:

  1. In Smile open Settings > AutoFill & passkeys and tap Ask for it - or in your vault open Devices on your iPhone and tap Ask for this iPhone.
  2. Safari opens and asks to download a profile. Allow it, then go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management (or the Profile Downloaded line at the top of Settings) and install it. It only sends this iPhone’s ID, model, iOS version and name to Smile - nothing is installed and nothing else is read.
  3. A Smile founder checks it’s really you and approves it.
  4. On your iPhone open Devices (in Smile or in Safari) and tap Install. iOS asks “Install Smile?” - it goes over the version you have, and your vault is kept.
  5. Turn it on: Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords > turn on Smile (Smile’s Settings > AutoFill & passkeys > Open Settings takes you there).

New versions of the full version install with one tap: Settings > About > Update, and iOS installs it over the old one.

Remarque

Apple allows a limited number of iPhones a year, so each one is approved by a founder. You can remove an iPhone from your Devices page any time.

Fill passwords, codes and passkeys in other apps

With the full version and AutoFill turned on:

  • Passwords: tap a login box - your accounts for that site show above the keyboard. Tap one, unlock Smile (Face ID works), and it fills in. Or tap the key and choose Smile to search.
  • 2-step codes: on iOS 18 and newer, code boxes offer your Smile Auth codes.
  • Passkeys (iOS 17 and newer): when a site or app offers a passkey, choose Smile - to sign in, or to save a new one. Passkeys are saved in your vault, so they work on your other devices too.

Showing your accounts above the keyboard can be turned off in Settings > AutoFill & passkeys. iOS only ever gets the site and the username - never a password or a key.

Set Smile as your app for 2FA codes

Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords > Set Up Codes In > Smile. When you scan a 2FA QR code with the Camera, it opens in Smile for you to add. (This works with KSign too.)

Face ID and trusted devices

  • Settings > Security > Unlock with Face ID (or Touch ID) - see Unlock with your fingerprint or face.
  • Or tick Trust this device for 30 days when you unlock - see Trusted devices.
  • Smile covers itself in the app switcher and while your screen is being recorded or mirrored, unless you allow screenshots in Settings > Security.

Other ways to install

The .ipa from the download page works with any signer: KSign, Feather, ESign, Scarlet, AltStore or Sideloadly.

With a computer (Sideloadly):

  1. On a Windows PC or Mac install Sideloadly from sideloadly.io (on Windows also iTunes and iCloud from apple.com, not the Microsoft Store versions).
  2. Download the .ipa, plug in your iPhone, unlock it and tap Trust.
  3. Drag the .ipa into Sideloadly, type your Apple ID and click Start.
  4. On the iPhone turn on Settings > Privacy & Security > Developer Mode (it restarts), then Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > your Apple ID > Trust.

With a free Apple ID, apps installed this way stop opening after 7 days - click Start in Sideloadly again (nothing in your vault is lost).
