Trusted devices

Skip your vault password on a device only you use, for 30 days - and stop it from anywhere.

Обновлено 26 сент. 2026 г.2 мин чтения

On a device only you use, you can skip your vault password for 30 days: your vault, passwords and passkeys open without it. This works in the Smile app (Windows, Linux, Android, iPhone) and the Chrome extension - not on the website, because browsers are too often shared.

Trust a device

When you unlock, tick Trust this device for 30 days (in the extension: Trust this browser for 30 days). You can also do it later from Devices > Trust this device.

After that, the device opens by itself - including when an app or website asks for a password or passkey. If you press Lock yourself, it stays locked until you tap Open (still no password).

How it’s kept safe

  • Your vault password is never stored. The device keeps only the keys made from it, sealed with a key that only Smile’s server holds.
  • The server hands that key back only to this device (it proves a secret only it has) while it’s signed in to your account. The device’s files alone, or your sign-in alone, open nothing.
  • The device’s part is kept by the system: Windows (DPAPI), the Linux keyring, the Android Keystore or the iPhone Keychain.
Внимание

Anyone who can use a trusted device while it’s signed in can open your vault on it. Only trust a device only you use, with its own screen lock.

See and stop trusted devices

Open Devices in Smile Auth (on any device, or on the website). You’ll see:

  • This device - whether it’s trusted, and until when;
  • Trusted devices - each one, when it was last used, and Stop trusting;
  • Signed-in devices - everything signed in to your account, with Sign out.

Trust also ends by itself after 30 days, when you sign out of that device, when you change your vault password, and if Smile staff lock every vault in an emergency.
