Edit text and code files

Open .txt, .json, .html, .py, .js and other text files in Files and edit them right in your browser.

Text and code files open in an editor right on the Files page - no need to download them, change them and upload them again. It works on every plan.

Which files open in the editor

Plain text and code: .txt, .md, .json, .html, .css, .js, .ts, .py, .php, .java, .cs, .go, .lua, .yml, .ini, .env, .sql, .csv, .xml, .sh, .bat, .ps1, files called Dockerfile or README, and many more - around 70 kinds. Files up to 2 MB can be edited here.

Anything else - pictures, PDFs, Office files, archives - shows its details with Download (and Open for pictures and PDFs, or Extract here for archives).

Open, edit and save

  1. Click the file in the folder tree or the main area. It opens in a tab.
  2. Make your changes. A gold dot next to the file’s name means there are changes you haven’t saved.
  3. Click Save, or press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on a Mac).

Close the tab with the ✕. If you try to leave with changes you haven’t saved, Files asks first.

To make a new file, use New → Text or code file and give it a name with its ending, like config.json or bot.py. Leave the ending off and it’s made as a .txt file.

Handy keys

Key What it does
Tab Indents (two spaces). With several lines selected, indents them all
Shift+Tab Un-indents the selected lines
Enter Starts the next line at the same indent - one step further after {, [, ( or :
Ctrl+S / Cmd+S Saves

The bar along the bottom shows the line and column you’re on, the kind of file and how many lines it has.

When someone else saves first

If someone else saves the same file while you have it open, your Save is stopped so nobody’s work is overwritten. Copy your changes, close the tab, open the file again to see their version, and paste your changes back in.

Suggerimento

On a phone, the tree fills the screen. Opening a file switches to the editor, and the back arrow takes you to the tree.
