Zip, RAR and 7-Zip files
Extract archives into a folder, or compress files and folders into a .zip or .7z, right in Files.
Files can open archives for you and make new ones - no software needed on your computer.
Extract an archive
Works with .zip, .rar, .7z, .tar, .gz, .tgz, .bz2 and .xz (and a .tar.gz opens in one go).
- Right-click the archive (or click its •••) and choose Extract here. You can also open the archive and click Extract here.
- Everything inside appears in a new folder next to it, with the archive’s name, keeping its own folders.
The archive itself stays where it was - delete it if you don’t need it any more.
Before anything is extracted, Files checks it:
| Check | Limit |
|---|---|
| Size once extracted | Up to 2 GB, and it must fit in your organisation’s storage |
| Number of files | Up to 5,000 |
| Password | Archives with a password can’t be extracted here - extract them on your computer |
Compress files and folders
- Right-click a file or folder and choose Compress… - or click the tick button in the toolbar, tick several things in the same folder, and click Compress.
- Give it a name and choose the type:
- .zip opens on any computer or phone.
- .7z is smaller, but needs a program like 7-Zip to open.
- Click Compress. The archive is saved in the same folder.
Folders go in with everything inside them. Documents go in as web pages (.html) and forms as their questions (.form.json). You can compress up to 2 GB, or 20,000 files, at a time.
RemarqueThe new archive counts towards your storage like any other file. To send someone a folder, compress it and then download the archive.
