Your website's address

Every website on Smile Hosting has its own address on smilehosting.tech, like my-site.smilehosting.tech. The part before .smilehosting.tech is the subdomain, and you choose it.

Choosing one

You pick the subdomain when you create the website. Leave it empty and we make one from the website’s name, with a few characters on the end so it’s unique - for example my-site-4f2a9c.

A subdomain must be:

• 3 to 40 characters long
• lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only - no spaces, dots or other symbols
• free of hyphens at the start or end, and of two hyphens in a row
• not already used by someone else’s website

Some names can’t be used at all:

• names Smile Hosting uses itself, such as www, mail, api, dashboard, admin, support and status
• names our team has blocked - for example ones that pretend to be another company
• adult or explicit names. These are never allowed, including with numbers or symbols swapped in for letters

The box tells you as you type whether a name is free.

Change it

1. Open your website and go to Settings.
2. Under Domains, type the new subdomain.
3. Click Save.

The change happens instantly and the old address stops working straight away. Update any links you’ve shared - in your Discord server, your bio or anywhere else.

“Choose a new address”

If the subdomain your site uses is later blocked, your site stops being shown there and you’ll see Choose a new address the next time you open the website. Type a new subdomain and click Save new address - your site is shown at the new address straight away.
