Remote Desktop won't connect

Can't reach your VPS, or your password isn't accepted - work through these.

“Remote Desktop can’t connect to the remote computer”

  1. Is the server on? On its page on vps.smilehosting.tech, check the status. If it’s off, press Boot and wait a minute.
  2. Is it brand new? A new server takes about 15 minutes to build, then a few more to finish setting itself up on first start. Give it time.
  3. Did you copy the whole address? Including the : and the number after it. Without the number, Remote Desktop tries the wrong port.
  4. Is your own network blocking it? Some school, work and public Wi-Fi networks block Remote Desktop. Try from another network, such as your phone’s hotspot.
  5. Has it frozen? Try Restart, and if that does nothing, Power Off then Boot. See Power controls.

“The credentials that were used to connect did not work”

  • The username is Administrator (not your email). If your Remote Desktop app keeps adding your own computer’s name, type .\Administrator.
  • The password is the one you chose on the server’s page - not your Smile VPS website password.
  • Check Caps Lock, and that your keyboard layout matches.
  • Haven’t set one yet? See Set your password and connect.

I’ve forgotten my server’s password

We never see it, so we can’t tell you it. We can issue you a new one:

  1. Open a ticket with your server’s name.
  2. We’ll reset it and send you the new password once.
  3. Sign in with it and keep it somewhere safe, like a password manager.

If you ever need your server’s password changed, open a ticket and our team will do it for you.

Still stuck? Email [email protected] or open a ticket in our Discord.
