Don't upload your dependencies

Why node_modules and venv folders break things, and what to do instead.

Bijgewerkt op 12 sep 20261 min lezen

Folders like node_modules and venv hold the packages your code uses. They’re built for the computer they were installed on. Copied to a server, they often break - and they’re huge, so uploading them is slow and eats your storage.

What to leave out

Language Leave out
Node.js / Bun node_modules
Python venv, .venv, env, __pycache__
Rust target
Any .git, and anything your editor made (.vscode, .idea)

What to do instead

Upload your dependency list, and let the server install from it:

  1. Make sure it’s up to date: package.json for Node.js, requirements.txt for Python, Cargo.toml, go.mod and so on.
  2. Upload your files without the folders above.
  3. On Settings, click Install deps.

Already uploaded them?

  1. On the Files tab, tick the node_modules (or venv) folder and click Delete selected.
  2. Click Install deps on Settings.
  3. Press Start.
Tip

Python: make a requirements.txt from the packages you use with pip freeze > requirements.txt, then remove anything your bot doesn’t need.
