Install Smile on a Chromebook

Turn on your Chromebook's Linux, then install the Smile .deb.

Smile runs on Chromebooks through ChromeOS’s built-in Linux. It’s the same app as on Windows and Linux, and it’s in beta.

1. Turn on Linux (once)

Go to Settings > About ChromeOS > Developers > Linux development environment and click Set up. It takes a few minutes.

Remarque

School and work Chromebooks may not allow Linux. If the option is missing or greyed out, ask whoever manages the Chromebook - or use Smile Auth on the web and the Chrome extension instead.

2. Download Smile

On auth.smilecorp.co.uk/download, open the Linux & ChromeOS card, choose ChromeOS and click Download for Chromebook (.deb).

Most Chromebooks have an Intel or AMD processor. Only pick ARM Chromebook if Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details mentions ARM, MediaTek or Snapdragon.

3. Install and open it

  1. Open Files, find the .deb in Downloads and double-click it.
  2. Click Install.
  3. Open Smile from the launcher’s Linux apps folder and sign in.

Smile updates itself, and every update is checked against Smile’s signature first.

Smile Connect on a Chromebook

A Chromebook’s screen can’t be shared with Smile Connect, but you can use one to connect to your other devices: open connect.smilecorp.co.uk in Chrome.
